It was reported Thursday that Atlanta United are set to let go of star striker Josef Martinez. This comes as a shock for many fans who have been in constant support of Josef for the last six years. This decision brings further controversy to an already existing issue with the fans.
Ok now to my opinion. I believe that this is the RIGHT move for the club. Yes, Josef was the guy, but I'm more concerned about now, not 2018. This club (especially Carlos Bocanegra) had to make this move because jobs are on the line this year, and obviously they believe that this team cannot win a championship with Josef at striker.
I absolutely LOVE Josef Martinez to death, I could go on and on about how much he means to the city. But when I am going on and on about his good impact, it is almost entirely about events from 3 years ago.
In terms of replacements for the greatest striker in club history, that is a different story. Because these fans will expect sooooooo much. My pick which has been a consensus among people I talk to is Gabriel Barbosa of Flamengo. He is incredible and definetly the number one guy if you are in a situation like Boca, who is close to losing his job.
Even though change is becoming rapid, this offseason will be exciting for Atlanta United fans. So many new moves including a brand new president (which will be very confusing because who knows if he's a roster guy.) All in all, the future can only get BETTER for this club, even though they lost their greatest player today.
