The twitter thread I was involved in this morning regarding Garth Lagerway’s comments (via The AJC) on potentially moving a player. (who we can infer is Marcelino Moreno) Moreno, who is currently on loan to Coritiba, currently has a TAM hit in terms of his contract. So how does shifting Moreno to a more lucrative spot benefit Atlanta United? This is the exact question I asked this morning when I first heard the news. Here is the quote:
So at first glance you are probably sitting eyes wide open while mouthing “why the f___” and that was me at like 9 in the morning. But then I got into the most head spinning twitter thread in a while. I saw ATLUTD Twitter legend Rob Usry post this:
I decided to chat to someone about the Garth quote I just heard, so I responded “It’s coming, based on the recent Moreno contract news” Then the world exploded. After Rob heard what I heard from Garth, he was baffled as well. Then my good friend Sam Jones (writer for The Striker) responded with this:
Now it made sense, but there were 2 counterarguments to this point that brought even more confusion. The first one saying that it was Barco being shifted to DP (even though he already is one) and that Garth was actually referring to signing a new DP on loan instead of us adjusting a player already on loan. So I read the quote 15 times over and got even MORE confused. All 3 arguments seemed valid I just did not know what to prescribe to. Here’s my reaction to all of this while my head had more RPMs than a Honda Civic on 85 South:

My brain exploded like a faulty battery inside of a Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Sam and I finally gained a little closure and our brains started slowing down like a beyblade that just got absolutely bodied and is wiggling slowly.
We still do not know the definitive answer to the problem, but here is what I think. Marcelino Moreno’s contract will do some wiggling and he’ll technically become a DP. This will open bunches of TAM money for new signings. It will also open up Moreno’s DP slot because Moreno is on loan. There are a lot more intricacies to this, but that is what is important. But imagine if this never happens, and I fried my brain on a friday morning for nothing. Tough scenes.
